Parasites
Dog poop can carry roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms, several of which are zoonotic (can infect humans). Roundworm eggs especially can survive in soil for years and are a known cause of infection in children who play in contaminated yards (a condition called toxocariasis, which in rare cases can cause vision problems).
Giardia and coccidia are common intestinal parasites spread through contact with infected feces.
Bacteria
Dog waste commonly contains E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter — all of which can cause gastrointestinal illness in humans, especially kids who touch contaminated grass/soil and then their mouths.
Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that can spread through contaminated soil and water, is another risk in areas with heavy pet traffic.
Environmental/water quality
The EPA has classified dog waste as a nonpoint source pollutant. When it rains, waste left on the ground washes into storm drains, and since storm drains typically flow directly into local streams and waterways (unlike sewage, which gets treated), it contributes to nutrient pollution and bacterial contamination in local water sources.
A single gram of dog feces can contain 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, and studies have linked accumulated dog waste to elevated bacteria counts in urban watersheds.
Lawn/yard health
Contrary to popular belief, dog waste is not a good fertilizer — it's too acidic and nitrogen-dense for grass, and left-behind waste tends to kill patches of lawn rather than nourish it.
Odor & pest attraction
Accumulated waste attracts flies, which can mechanically transfer bacteria from feces to other surfaces (including food prep areas if flies get inside), and can also draw rodents in some conditions.
What does disinfecting do?
Deodorizing — neutralizes or eliminates the molecules that cause odor (what K.O.E. does) — doesn't necessarily kill anything
Disinfecting — actually reduces the population of harmful microorganisms to a safe level, typically measured as killing 99.9%+ of specific listed pathogens within a specific contact time (this is the EPA-regulated claim)
How it actually works, mechanically, depends on the chemistry:
Oxidizers (hypochlorous acid, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide) — rupture the cell membrane or damage the internal proteins/DNA of the microorganism through oxidation, which kills it. This is the class Sgt. Poopers' product almost certainly falls into.
Quaternary ammonium compounds ("quats," found in things like OdoBan and many kennel disinfectants) — disrupt the cell membrane structurally, causing the cell to leak and die.
Alcohols — denature proteins in the microorganism.
Why it matters for your specific service: going back to the health risks list — E. coli, Salmonella, Giardia, roundworm eggs — those aren't destroyed just because you scooped the visible poop or the yard smells fresh. Waste leaves behind a residue on grass/soil that can still carry live pathogens even after pickup. Disinfecting is the step that actually addresses that residual biological risk; deodorizing and scooping don't.
